The arts according to me

The arts according to me

The concept of art is not connected to specific views, but dependent on changing aesthetic opinions. It is found in highly civilised societies and among primitive tribes.

The concept of art which I use is entirely personal. It’s a notion I have developed without having found any movement or school to be a part of, completely without academic preferences – by contemplating, as you might say, my own navel. In the hope that my reasons for doing what I do will be understood, I will now try to do the impossible: I will try to describe my own personal concept of art as it is today.

To me, art is:
A spiritual dimension in a work which arises because of a vision, a will, a choice and an unconscious presence in the process of creation.
It does not arise from the will to create art, for the spirit cannot be controlled by the will, but rather in an openness which allows the spirit or inspiration to come to the artist.
It has no uniforms, but exists as spirituality in the work.
The artist is, in essence, a missionary, driven by an urge, first of all, to create. Equally important, however, is the urge to communicate his vision, his truth, his dream---and his belief and hope that his art will move the world towards a new realisation.

For me, working with art is a lonely process; the state preceding the act of creation is often a feeling of emptiness and lack of talent. It might even be a feeling of desperation over not being able to grasp and realise a vision. There are a myriad of roads which can often be difficult to travel. The journey has a price. It can be painful!
And yet when there is a breakthrough, working with art can be the source of greatest pleasure.
